WGU Multimedia Process Reflection Essay

I began with the idea that I wanted to create a video that enticed its viewers to be a part of a future Virtual Field Trip staff development session. I wanted to begin with some catchy phrases, some pictures to capture their attention that also went along with the audio, and finally a video presentation of a website that was part of the virtual fieldtrip presentation. This framework enabled me to find the images and clip art, create the audio, and capture the website with less distraction. I used two programs to “create” my story board. Adobe Captivate allowed me to digitally create a storyboard which I have included as an Appendix. It is much easier than the storyboarding in Windows Movie Maker (WMM). I was also able to print my storyboard from Captivate. I then took the same data and created the product in WMM paying attention to the detail of timing and transitions using the storyboard provided there.

1. Describe your experiences about using this product.
I chose the four products for this task. Windows Movie Maker which is a home quality movie maker where an average user can create, edit, and share video in a windows file format. It is extremely easy to use and made this process enjoyable especially since I have used it many times before. Audacity is free software made for recording and editing sounds. It is also available for different OS platforms, and was very easy to learn. PowerPoint is presentation software used on many platforms and in a variety of settings. I have used PowerPoint for many years, so it was not an issue to use. Camtasia Studio is "smart" video screen capture software that runs on the windows platform. It was not difficult to learn as a first time user. The smart features really improved the video quality for a novice user.
2. Explain why you did or did not deviate from your planned design process.
I changed my plans twice in this project. Once because I did not like my progress in the original topic I had chosen, and a second time because the output of my final project was in Flash format and not in mpeg as I wanted. The latter was a real bummer!!
3. Identify a use of this technology tool for teaching and a use for learning.
Podcasting has become a powerful tool in sharing information in multimedia form. Podcasts exist on a variety of education topics as well as topics including entertainment, sports, business, news. TeacherTube, the academic version of YouTube, is a site that allows the posting of videos that are education related. Even if you are not technically podcasting, posting of videos on teacher tube allows a multimedia approach to education, and contributes to the learning anytime, anywhere philosophy.
4. Explain why you had difficulty using a part of this technology tool.
The only difficulty was based in the fact that video requires a lot of ram, and I needed about double the amount I have to do this work at a reasonable pace. Windows Movie Maker also crashed near the end of my project each time I tried to make more than one change without saving.
5. Explain what you would do differently if you were going to design with this learning tool again.
With what I learned from my mistakes, I need more ram, need a bit more time, and I now can direct others to the best software to use.
6. Predict how you could use your experience to train someone else in the use of this tool.
I can assist several of our teachers that have begun the process of podcasting and web-casting their lectures. I can also help them with the integration of these video tools into the instruction process.
